My Maiden Voyage Into Set Building

In my many years collecting basketball cards, I have never completed an entire set. Not a base set, insert set, memorabilia set, nothing. I have never had the desire to. I have either focused my efforts on collecting a particular player or team or been guilty of collecting a little bit of everything.

Well, all of that is about to change. Given the uniqueness, quality, and collectability of Panini’s  inagural Prizm basketball release, I have decided to attempt to collect the entire base set (inserts included). As far as the Prizm, Green, and Gold refractors, I am going to focus my energy and money on getting my hands on as many of the retail-exclusive Green Prizms as possible.

I have made somewhat significant progress in accumulating Prizm’s robust, 300 card base set. I have purchased roughly 30 packs of retail from Target and Wal-Mart, in addition to receiving a hobby box as a Christmas gift last month, resulting in a decent stack of cards.

In my many adventures busting retail packs of Prizm, I have landed a total of five Green Prizms, including Jose Calderon, Antawn Jamison, Al-Farouq Aminu, Meyers Leonard, and a Larry Bird Green MVP Insert Card. I have also purchased four Green Prizms on ebay, Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol, Hakeem Olajuwon and Bill Walton, giving me a grand total of nine green refractors.

I have not been able to find another Larry Bird Green MVP card on ebay, I am hoping to get a feel for its value soon.

Check out photos below of some of the cards mentioned above.

I will be updating my progress on building the set.
