Tomorrow, 2011-12 Upper Deck Exquisite Basketball will make its long awaited arrival to hobby store shelves around the country. Each box contains one pack with six cards each, five of which are autographed.
With such a high-end product, I had plenty of jaw dropping autograph and insert sets to choose from to feature here at the blog. But instead of drooling over autographed cards of MJ, LeBron and Dr. J, I thought I would show some of the game’s best coaches a little bit of love.
Upper Deck gets huge kudos from me for their Coaches Blackboard Autograph Cards. The set includes a total of 20 autographed cards of current and retired coaches from the college and professional ranks. Each card is serially numbered to 40.
Here is the complete list of coaches featured: Billy Donovan, Ben Howland, Bo Ryan, Bill Self, Jim Calhoun, George Karl, Gary Williams, Bob Huggins, Jim Boeheim, Jerry Sloan, Jay Wright, Larry Brown, Mark Few, Mike Montgomery, Pat Riley, Rick Majerus, Roy Williams, Steve Fisher, Tom Izzo and Tubby Smith.
The checklist is college coach heavy, but what the list lacks in professional coach quantity, it certainly makes up for it with quality. Hence the Pat Riley and Jerry Sloan cards!
Coaches rarely get their due respect in the world of basketball cards. The fact they are featured in such a high-end product as Exquisite is both refreshing and long overdue.
